Money by Martin Amis

Language makes my heart thud harder; my creative juices jolt alive. It’s why I write. Not that story isn’t important. It is. But for my taste, story goes hand in hand with *how* it’s written. Which brings me to my all-important point—“Money”, a novel by Martin Amis is both an excellent read and brimming with evocative language.

The story follows John Self as he bulldozes his way through 70s Manhattan while promoting a movie he’s backing, financially. The man is flawed. He’s got huge appetites…women, fighting, drinking, conning others, watching porn. Sounds a bit sordid, huh? But remember—words, wordplay, language. 🙂 Amis makes you think without banging you over the head with his brilliance. In other words, he makes a guy like me feel smart and ‘in the know’. Who doesn’t want to feel like that?

But don’t rely on me, reader. I mean, who exactly am I? David Bowie—now he was somebody. And “Money” was an all-time favorite. He told me so. Er, that’s not exactly true. (It was during our early, awkward email stage). Where was I? Oh, yes, “Money.” So…if you’re a lover of great fucking sentences, laugh out louds, sex, imbibing, Hollywood players, AND ROMANCE, then you’ll love “Money”.

I’ll end with this: “Money” was/is a huge influence on my writing. So if you get a chance, pick up the paperback. What else are you going to do? It’s Covid season.
