Truisms

 

I feel stupid and self-conscious wearing a face-mask but it might just save another human being’s life.

I suppose that's a truism. I've been thinking a lot lately about the artist Jenny Holzer and her series of truisms. Like this one: 

IT CAN BE STARTLING TO SEE SOMEONE'S BREATH, LET ALONE THE BREATHING OF A CROWD. YOU USUALLY DON'T BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE EXTEND THAT FAR.

That truism is inscribed on a bench as part of Holzer's 1989 The Living Series, featured in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at the Walker Museum of Art.
